Nominations and Elections for the 64th Synod:
Nominations are sought for positions on Executive Council, delegates to General Synod, delegates to Provincial Synod, the Court of the Synod of the Diocese of Edmonton, and Clerical and Lay Recorders for the 65th Synod. The guidelines for the nominations and the nomination form are posted on the diocesan website: http://edmonton.anglican.org/synod/synod2015/nominations/forms-and-guidelines/ .
This is an exciting time in the Anglican Church. If you are interested in the workings of the church within the diocese, the Ecclesiastical Province of Rupert’s Land, or the Anglican Church of Canada, please consider putting your name forward for one of these positions.
What are these bodies?
Executive Council is like the “Vestry” of the Diocese, with lay and clergy representatives from each of the regions of the Diocese. It meets about every two months. It will be continuing with the ongoing work of the Diocese, with the work begun at our Synod, and in proclaiming the gospel, making disciples and furthering the kingdom.
Provincial Synod meets every three years. It is like our Diocesan Synod, with the bishops, and clergy and lay delegates from each of the dioceses in the Ecclesiastical Province of Rupert’s Land – i.e. the dioceses of Athabasca, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Qu’Appelle, Brandon, Rupert’s Land, the Arctic, and the Indigenous Spiritual Ministry of Mishamikoweesh. The next Provincial Synod will be convened at Manitou Springs in Watrous, SK from June 18th to 21st, 2015.
General Synod is the Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada – the Synod of our national church. Delegates (bishops, clergy and lay) come from all 30 dioceses in Canada. The next General Synod will convene in Richmond Hill, Diocese of Toronto, July 7-13, 2016.
The Court of the Diocese of Edmonton is comprised of members of the clergy and laity (one of whom is a member of the Law Society of Alberta), along with the Bishop and Chancellor. The Court deals with disciplinary charges against members of the clergy and legal questions referred by the Bishop. The Court has never been convened in the history of the Diocese.
Lay and Clerical Recorders are elected at this Synod to do their work at the next Synod. They have the responsibility of taking the minutes of the sessions of Synod and preparing them for publication by the Secretary of Synod.
The deadline for submission of nominations is Friday, March 27th, 2015.
Elections will be held on Friday, April 24th, as part of the business during the opening evening of Synod.
Ven. Joanne Webster (chair) (Yellowhead), Ven. Lee Bezanson (Edmonton West), Ven. Jacques Vaillancourt (Whitemud), Very Rev. Neil Gordon (Cold Lake), Rev. Cameron Burns (Battle River).
