The Diocese of Edmonton took part in the City of Edmonton-sponsored event “Africa Connect!” on June 18th at the Edmonton Expo Centre. An estimated 3,000 people attended the exhibition and gala dinner, celebrating 2011 as the international year for people of African descent.
Our display highlighted the Sudanese Episcopal Congregation’s service of Holy Communion which is celebrated in the Dinka language at All Saint’s Cathedral every Sunday at 2:00 pm.
We also featured the commitment made by Bishop Jane Alexander and Bishop Sixbert Macumi of the Diocese of Buye in Burundi, Africa, to “walk together in faith”. Since 2009, the Edmonton diocese has sent 10,000 insecticide-treated nets to the Buye diocese to help prevent the spread of malaria. We are currently accepting monetary donations for the “Building Life” project , to send essential medical supplies to the Buye Diocese in the fall. Our goal is to raise $12,000 to fill a 40-ft. container with supplies. Cheques may be written to the Diocese of Edmonton, with “Burundi Medical Supplies” marked in the notes.
