Alpha is a ten-week course designed as a practical introduction to the basics of Christianity with plenty of opportunity for debate and discussion. The style of Alpha is deliberately friendly and informal. Each week people get together for a meal, a talk on topics such as “Who is Jesus?”, “Why Did Jesus Die?” and “How Can I be Sure of My Faith?”, followed by small group discussion. There is a day or weekend retreat midway through the course which focuses on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Alpha can benefit those who have never set foot in a church, those who once attended, and those who are regular churchgoers. investigating Christianity for the first time, or revisiting your faith. Alpha has a marriage preparation course, ESL course, parenting courses and the Youth Film Series. To find out about running a course email Alpha Coordinator, Amy Croy firstname.lastname@example.org. For information on upcoming courses, check with your local parish or visit the Alpha Canada Website.
Ways to use the Alpha Youth Film Series
Launch a Youth Ministry: One Church did an excellent job of inviting others to come to Alpha. Three youth became twelve and a youth group was formed after Alpha.
Evangelism: Alpha was created for Christians to invite their friends and neighbours. Book Amy Croy to meet with your youth for a Taste of Alpha Session and she will help your group plan an Alpha kick-off they will be excited to invite friends to.
Primer for Confirmation Preparation: Gather up youth to do Alpha and encourage them to invite their friends. When Alpha is done, offer a confirmation program as a way for students to own their baptism. Incorporate offering baptism for guests who have not been baptized.
Train Leaders: Alpha comes with three training sessions which can be facilitated by Amy Croy. Leaders can be 14 or 84. Leading a small group for 10 weeks gives team members essential skills for leading in the future.
Ecumenical Partners : Team up with other Churches in your neighbourhood to run Alpha for all the church youth, their friends and other students in the area.
Outreach: Offer Alpha for Youth in your neighbourhood. Host it at your church, a local coffee shop or community centre. Churches can assist students who are leading Alpha in a local school by connecting them with youth in your church, providing prayer support, food and / or a venue for the day away.
Be Creative: One Church ran a small group for parents who watched the Youth Film Series at the same time as their kids.
